100% say YES!
Issued by The Littlehampton Community Charter Group on Monday 1st July 2013
The Littlehampton Civic Society will host the first official Community Charter Signing on Friday 5th July 2013, between 11am and 1pm at St. Mary’s Church Hall, Church Street, Littlehampton, BN7 5PX
At the recent Public meeting hosted by The Littlehampton Civic Society and The East Beach Residents Association, there was standing room only in the Millennium Chamber at the Littlehampton Town Hall. An accident in Franciscan Way meant traffic blocks caused many people to arrive very late, but still they came, regardless
100% of those attending voted in favour of standing united and backing the Littlehampton Community Charter.
After a presentation on aspects of the Charter, strong support came from Nick Gibb MP for Bognor and Littlehampton, who declared earlier that he was “Totally supportive of the Charter”, a letter from Dr James Walsh, Council Member on Town, District and County Councils was read, in which Dr Walsh supported the Charter and requested that it is “submitted as part of the community response to the draft Littlehampton Neighbourhood plan”, he further added “It is important that we do not set up divisions or barriers between different parts of our community. We have come so far together as a united community, and it is that togetherness and common purpose that has served us well to this point”
Ian Buckland, Councilor for Town and County also indicated his support and reminded the audience; It was their Neighbourhood Plan, “The people’s plan, not the Councils, so it is imperative that they come and engage with the Council” he further has said “I think this would be a good document (the Charter) in support of the Neigbourhood plan”
A broad spectrum of many groups, covering Theatre, Cinema, Sport, Civic Societies from the greater Littlehampton area attended, giving support to the Charter principles and voicing their desire that the Charter should be implemented as soon as possible. The initial stages of the Charter will deal with the Community Vision on the Leisure Strategy for our area
Many of the Speakers launching the Charter confirmed their strongest intention was to be able to work with Town, District and County Council in the most harmonious way. To help make it happen, the Community Charter proposes to help strengthen community empowerment and make greater use of local knowledge, to better balance decisions on all our local amenities. It will offer a clear, unambiguous statement of local community vision and resolve, for a common-sense approach to key local decisions.
After a Community discussion of their points of view and listening to some very strong reasons from the floor as to how the Charter would be better able to assist their Group or, Association, many individuals expressed their offers of help in achieving greater awareness of the Charter to the people of greater Littlehampton.
At the close of the meeting those attending were asked to second and vote on the following motions:
· Accept the Community Charter in Principle
· Authorise local Organisation Representatives to finalise and sign the Charter
· Authorise and Agree on Submission of the Charter and accompanying documents to Neighbourhood Plans in Greater Littlehampton
And from the floor a motion was proposed that:
· To ask the Town Council if they would consider extending the consultation period for the Neighbourhood Plan by a period of 3 months, to allow further consultation.
All motions were seconded and passed with 100% approval from the floor, with no abstentions or rejections
Councillor Ian Buckland offered his assistance and said he would write to Littlehampton Town Council requesting the following: “I am asking the Town council if they would consider extending the consultation period for the Neighbourhood Plan for however long they deem it is feasibly possible taking into consideration and type of planning or lawful constraint”.
The first official Community Charter Signing will be on Friday 5th July 2013 between 11am and 1pm at St. Mary’s Church Hall, Church Street, Littlehampton, BN7 5PX focalised by the Littlehampton Civic Society, during their regular Coffee morning.
